Melita’s blatant lies!

I’m shopping around for a new phone. I obviously lust after an iPhone 4 being the apple fanboy that I am. Having said that I am in no position to afford a phone even half the price and have no need whatsoever for a contract.

So out of curiosity I went to see what the networks are offering. The iphone is priced on the following sites: scanmalta.com, klikk.com.mt, vodafone.com.m and go.com.mt at between 649 and 699

Melita in their wisdom claim that the phone is priced at €900. And even on their contracts it’s more expensive than the prepaid or contract versions.

iphone4 now available to order in Malta! And the price is fair!

The iphone 4 graphic nicked from apple.com

The iphone 4 graphic nicked from apple.com

I was pretty surprised to learn the iPhone 4 has become available to order via Vodafone Malta and iCentre (local apple distributor). I don’t know if this launch has been kept low key or it’s because I don’t really follow the local media at all but I came across this news through someone I shall refer to as “He-Man”  posted a query on her Facebook status asking whether she should go for the 3Gs or the iphone 4. The pages give the prices of the phone without contract – I’ll save you unnecessary clicking and your can read below for more information. I was shocked that the contract-less prices were reasonable when compared with those abroad! I will not go into the merits of comparing the contracts because I have to do more research – I’m a computer geek so the prehistoric technology that is the phone never interested me. The iPhone is the mac of the future in my pocket. Unfortunately I don’t own an iPhone because owning one would mean dropping it out of the holes in my pocket its cost would burn.

iphone 4 16gb iphone4 32gb
US ~ €439* ($599) ~ €512* ($699)
UK ~ €574* (£499) ~ €690* (£599)
Eire €599 €699
Malta €649 €769
Italy €659** €779**
Notes: * — denotes approximate currency conversions. These tend to be less than the real cost of currency conversion making the prices look cheaper than they really are.

** Even though it’s the most expensive price in this short list, through special offers and rebates it works out slightly cheaper than in Malta.

† All prices listed include the VAT of their home territory — it is unclear if the US list price includes the US equivalent sales tax.

So there you go — expensive as you’d expect but not inordinately more expensive compared to some places abroad. It’s about the same price as it’d cost you if you had it shipped from the UK with courier delivery and insurance.  The frogbat’s recommendation: if you are in the market for an iPhone 4 and wish to buy one contract free, jet off to London on a low cost airline to buy one (and get a holiday). The warranty should be an international one and should be honoured locally too (that’s a “should”)  and it’s not like they’d repair anything here anyway. Just register the product immediately with Apple once purchased. Obviously the matter changes completely if you wish to purchase an iPhone with a new contract. With a contract, the initial outlay becomes a bit more affordable… but your mileage may vary.

iTunes available in Malta! Well just the App store.

iTunes and App Store for iPhone and iPod touch make it to Malta

iTunes and App Store for iPhone and iPod touch make it to Malta

Living on a sun baked rock which is akin to a backwater province more than the locals would care to admit has many drawbacks for the geek, especially the macgeek such as yours truly. The Maltese have long equalled the Chinese in their propensity to choose illegal pirated music and films. Video and computer games soon followed.

I recall going to shops to buy copied games for my Amiga – some even rented them out for the explicit purpose of allowing people to copy them. Those were the day when the government was more permissive, things haven’t changed much in spite of many anti piracy laws. You can order ps2 games for €5 a pop from your local dvd rental outfit… after you have your machine chipped that is. You can buy any of the latest blockbusters from market stalls. Films which at times haven’t even been released at the local multiplexes. I myself are very guilty of illegally downloading files (don’t tell anyone now will you). the reason for all this? Well the fleecing of the Maltese consumer by the robber barons that import and distribute media. Oh and hey we all like a free lunch don’t we?

Personally, I’ve always tried my best to stick 2 fingers up at the local importers’ added tax (I understand economies of scale but some price hikes are just indicative of sheer greed) by importing what I can myself. Sometimes things can go wrong (I broke an hdd, a modem got fused as did my ps3 by lightning strike) but for the most part I’ve been satisfied because that could’ve easily happened had I bought them locally. One thing I definitely rarely ever buy here are movies or music. Play.com has come to the rescue as has Amazon. Maltapost are thriving by the number of deliveries they have to make and this has definitely hurt the local media suppliers. this has obviously not been without problems as so many items fail to get delivered some websites allegedly considered stopping exporting to Malta. Genuine cases of human error? In many cases yes, I’ve been sent wrong books and had items shipped to Malawi first. In other cases it’s the typical Maltapost inefficiency which means that an item that should arrive within 2 weeks max might take up to 6. So there have been occasions where I’ve had to have an order refilled only to have the original order arrive a month later. Though we all know a lot of items used to go missing…

So what’s my point? Well what about a nice online alternative for digital content? You know like iTunes – that brilliant move on Apple’s part to add value to their hardware. And the only real alternative to pirated music that has worked so far. Wouldn’t it be great if I could get the latest and greatest music at a decent price without lining the pockets of the greedy local retailers? Wouldn’t it be great to download episodes of my favourite TV shows without subscribing to the only channel on the island which might show it (don’t get me started on Melita – that’s another post). Well obviously being in Malta has meant that the service was not available. Until yesterday! Now we get iTunes. Er not quite. We actually get the App Store and the App Store alone.

I understand that music, TV and film rights are very tricky, but the EU should take a lead and centralised their rights issues or at least do it on a language based model :D . Ah well at least all those iPhone users can now avoid having to crack their phone or sign up with a foreign address in order to add more functionality to their phone which was promised to them my Vodafone Malta. Finally! One thing that does annoy me a bit is that in the drop down menu to select the store in iTunes, I almost couldn’t find Malta listed because for whatever reason, those lovely engineers at Apple (because anyone that works for Apple is an engineer and not a webmonkey responsible for a little bit of html coding…) decided to list us as “Republic of Malta” – probably the first and only time we were ever listed in a country selector on a website as such. Yes Apple you are correct – Republic of Malta is the full title but now I’d like to see all the other countries use their full titles too. United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland – catchy! But at least it’ll still be easier to find.

And yes, a frogbat is never happy.

The iPhone in Malta saga continues – people can no queue up for it!

It finally happened, Malta has finally caught up with the rest of the third world and had its very own iPhone launch day. I was told people were queuing up to pick up their ordered iPhones from various Vodafone outlets. I even got a little email from the local apple agents…

Will I be getting one? Not unless it’s a present from some rich admirer (donations towards the iphone fund will be accepted). My ipod touch and cheapo phone are enough for now and I’ve spent too much on toys of late.

The pricing isn’t awful but could be better. The most interesting price for the local consumer is the prepaid contract free package which is actually just the iPhone. The 8gb model comes in at €515 whilst the 16gb model weighs in at a hefty €599 – thats €15 and €30 more expensive than in Italy

Full pricing for the iPhone from Vodafone Malta can be found here – I will try and compile comparison charts with other countries in the coming days.

ah finally – iphone is officially announced in malta!

A pre-registration page has appeared on the malta vodafone site. I don’t want the iPhone so bad as to pre register. I want to know what the price plans are and if it will be available prepaid. Ah well. I’m off to try and fix my stylesheet.

Who gives an amputated rat’s nipple about the blackberry!?!

Vodafone Malta is promoting the launch of some Blaclberry or another when we are all expecting an official iPhone launch… It was meant to already happen. Who knows maybe GO have put spokes in the wheel since they have the rights to the name locally I believe.

At least I didn’t have to endure Voda’s “summer is now” banner which was up till a day or so ago.

iPhone 3G in Malta – Steve Jobs mentions it too

The above video clip is from Apple CEO’s Steve Jobs’ Worldwide Developer Conference keynote address. Basically every year Apple organises a developers’ conference where the Apple developers congregate and clap the latest announcements from Cupertino. Often, it’s been used to announce new consumer products. Case in point – this year’s unveiling of the new iPhone 3G. Not only (as mentioned in a previous post) has Apple listed Malta as one of the 70 countries it will be available in, but at the end of the presentation announcing the countries, Steve Jobs remarks that the next time someone is Malta they can get themselves an iPhone! His tone was jovial but it might be construed as condescending to our proud nation rock. Oh well we’re on apple’s site :D And steve Jobs mentioned us :D any publicity is good publicity isn’t it? I’m just glad I waited out the first gen iPhone. Now we wait with baited breath for the pricing announcements.

Thanks to my PHB for pointing this out.
